SHEBERGHAN (SW): The Taliban militants in Jawjzan province managed to overrun Kham Aab district, an official claimed on Monday.
Engineer Ahmad, governor for the district, told Salam Watandar the armed rebels have taken control of the district center, security headquarters, district administration compound and all villages here.
Meanwhile, Abdul Qader, a member of the provincial council, has rejected these claims. He informed that the armed members of the local uprising force surrendered the district to the Taliban without any resistance. He went on to say some members of this local militia have joined the Taliban after surrendered their outposts. The PC member warned if the government failed to pay due attention, the province would fall to the Taliban.
The provincial government has also discarded reports about fall of the district. Mohammad Raza Ghafoori, the spokesman for the provincial governor, said only three villages and some outposts of the local uprising force have fallen to the militants. He underlined the need for bringing back a battalion of the Afghan National Army (ANA) from Faryab to Jawzjan.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban, claimed in a message that ‘intense’ clashes with the security forces are underway in Kham Aab.
