FAIZABAD (SW) – The Taliban militants have overran the Arghanjkhwa district in Badakhshan province, an official has confirmed.
Abdullah Naji Nazari, member of the provincial council, told Salam Watandar the Taliban took the district under siege and waged coordinated assaults on Thursday. He said nine security forces got killed, seven got injured and five were taken as captive by the Taliban.
He claimed the security forces based in the district vacated the area after they did not receive additional troops and support.
However, Sanaullah Ruhani, spokesman for the police headquarters, has rejected these reports. He said the security forces have moved to higher positions, and the clashes are still underway. Ruhani asserted the additional troops have reached the area, and soon clean-up operation would be launched against the Taliban.
