“Taliban not interested in peace talks’’

26/02/2018

KABUL (SW): The war in Afghanistan is imposed from outside, and many neighboring countries are secretly backing the Taliban, officials at the High Peace Council (HPC) said on Monday.

This was said at a consultative meeting for peace with hundreds of religious scholars in the eastern zone. Addressing this moot in Jalalabad city, Attaur Rehman, vice president of the HPC, said a number of regional countries are supporting the Taliban secretly which is why this group is not willing to join the peace process.

He said that the war in Afghanistan is imposed from outside, and it can only be ended when the external factors want.

The HPC has been under criticism for being unable to achieve significant progress, however, the officials asserted the main impediment in this regard is the lack of interest in peace by the Taliban. The religious scholars have also been criticized for not spreading the message of peace in their areas of influence.

Meanwhile, Gulab Mangal, provincial governor of Nangarhar, urged religious scholars to take the message of peace with them, and propagate it via mosques for harmony across the country. The religious scholars present in the moot vowed to play their part in bringing peace to the country.
