FARYAB (SW): The Taliban have seized a security base in Gorzad village and two army posts on the Maimana – Mazar-e Sharif highway and reportedly have killed, injured, and captured more than 20 army soldiers.
According to reports, a large amount of ammunition has also been seized by the Taliban.
Mohammad Tahir Rahmani, head of Faryab Provincial Council told Salam Watandar that as a result of the collapse of a security base and two army posts on the Maimana – Mazar-e Sharif highway, 10 Afghan National Army soldiers were killed, 4 soldiers were wounded, and 7 soldiers have been taken away as hostages by the Taliban militia.
According to Rahmani, Taliban have also seized 3 machine gun, 3 rocket launchers, and 10 other weapons with thousands of ammunition.
Abdul Hakim Turak Oghli, security head of Shirin Tagab district of Faryab also confirmed the fall of the security base and the deaths of ANA soldiers and informed Salam Watandar that the security forces have also abandoned the checkpoints of several villages close to Shirin Tagab district and have retreated to the center of the district.
A credible source within the ANA who didn’t want to be named told Salam Watandar that the security forces have abandoned all the security checkpoints from Khwaja Sabzposh district to Shirin Tagab district and have retreated to the center of the district last night.
According to the source, the security forces who were returning back from Khwaja Sabzposh district had been ambushed by the Taliban and a Humvee Tank with 3 soldiers in it has been set on fire by the Taliban and 5 other security forces have been taken as hostages.
Despite multiple calls to Faryab security officials and 209th Shahin Corps, we did not succeed to get their opinion about this report.
