ZABUL (SW) – The Taliban insurgents killed at least 24 security forces in an attack on the first day of New Year ‘Nawroz’ in Zabul province, an official confirmed Friday.
According to Atta Jan Haq, provincial council chairman, a number of Taliban infiltrators helped the militants attack and kill 10 soldiers and 14 policemen in this attack.
Earlier, in his Nawroz message, president Ashraf Ghani stressed unity among Afghans was pivotal for peace. "More than ever before, Afghans are hopeful for peace, so more than ever before we must pay attention to unity and integration", he said.
Separately, the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad said in this Nawroz message that the best gift Afghan leaders can give to the country on this occasion is: “1. They reach an agreement on an inclusive government and end the political crisis; 2. They take the needed steps to take advantage of historic opportunity for peace; 3. They work together including the Taliban to contain and take care of the people from the scourge of the Coronavirus".
