JAWZJAN (SW): A local source who wanted to remain anonymous told Salam Watandar that the Taliban have kidnapped more than 70 people who applied for the jobs at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in Jawzjan and according to sources, they have been tortured.
According to this source, a number of these people have been released with the intervention of the local elders, but most of them are still in the Taliban’s custody.
Halima Sadaf Karimi, a member of Jawzjan Provincial Council also confirmed the news of kidnappings of these 70 people by the Taliban and expressed concern over the increasing insecurity in the province.
Amanullah Habibi, head of the local IEC office in Jawzjan said the Taliban have released the people who have been kidnapped after taking oath from them that they will not pursue their application for the employment with the IEC.
A number of civil society activists and some residents of Jawzjan have expressed concern over the increasing insecurity in the province and said that if the government does not pay attention to the security for the voters’ registration centers and polling stations, the election process will fail and no one will participate in the upcoming elections.
The Taliban have not yet released any statement to the media in this regard.
