Taliban kidnap 4 athletes in Herat, killing one of them

HERAT CITY (SW):  Adull Rauf Ahmadi, the spokesman for Herat Police Chief has said that the Taliban have kidnapped four football players form a playground in Shindand district.

The spokesman for Herat Police Chief confirmed that Taliban have killed one of the four football players immediately after the abduction. Ahmadi stated that police team has been sent to the area for probing the incident. He added that the police with the help of local elders would try to free the abducted athletes.

In the meantime, eye witnesses told Salam Watandar that Taliban abducted these four football players near a police station but the security forces did not react to the incident. The spokesperson for Herat Police Chief said that the football players were playing football in a ‘no-go zone’.

Nasir Ahmad, a football player, who was present on the occasion, told Salam Watandar that the Taliban kidnapped these four football payers including the Sports Director of Shindand district. He added that Taliban ferried these kidnapped players through the roads where security forces are stationed.

Nasir Ahmad confirmed that the Taliban have killed a player named Kaihan and freed the Sports Director of Shindand district hours after the abduction took place.

The motive behind the abduction remains uncertain.
