KABUL (SW) – Talks for peace between the U.S. and Taliban entered third day in Doha, Qatar on Monday.
A day earlier, Sebghatullah Ahmadi, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the peace talks have entered critical stage. Addressing a presser here, he said Afghanistan would soon receive a positive news in this connection.
However, Suhail Shaheen, spokesman for the Taliban’s Qatar office, said today talks would not be held with the Afghan government. In a social media post, he said talks would instead be held with the ‘Afghan sides’ after a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign troops is agreed upon during the presence of international observers.
In the meantime, a former Taliban-era official, Syed Akbar Aagha, has claimed the talks in Doha are focused mainly on the issue of withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan. He added agreement between the two sides on other matters would be difficult unless agreement is reached on this primary issue.
This comes as it is hoped the U.S. and Taliban might reach an agreement paving the way for intra-Afghan dialogue later this month.
