Taliban extorting money, food from locals in Jawzjan

SHEBERGHAN (SW) – The Taliban are forcing locals in Jawzjan’s Kham Ab district to pay monthly extortion money on top of three meals on daily basis to the rebels.

Engineer Ahmad, governor for Kham Ab, told Salam Watandar the Taliban are extorting AFN 1000 from each family. He said the rebels are imposing all sorts of rules, and doing whatever they wish to do here. He said on top of forcing men to grow beard and perform joint prayers five times a day, the Taliban are also collecting religious tax and meals.

The locals are angry at the government for not taking swift and effective measures to liberate them from such atrocious circumstances.

Two residents of the district, Khal Bibi and Kamaluddin, said they are too poor to make ends meet, but the Taliban have been forcing them to prepare meal for dozens of the rebels.

The local civil society sees the delay in launching a security operation here equal to paving way for the civilians’ massacre in the district.

The Taliban have not commented about this matter.
