SHEBERGHAN (SW): Officials claim the Taliban are extorting millions of afghanis as ‘taxes’ in areas under their control in Jawzjan province’s Mang Jek district.
Mateullah Ehsan, district governor, informed the Taliban are extorting up to AFN 80, 000 on monthly basis from each of the 25 villages under their control in the district. He said this amount sums-up to around two million afghanis a month.
A number of local residents have confirmed that the Taliban have warned them against non-compliance.
Spokesman for the provincial governor, Mohammad Reza Ghafori, said in this regard that the Taliban have also encroached upon public property in four other districts where they have given away some 25 jeribs on mortgage to farmers, and forcefully collect money from them.
Besides Qosh Tapa and Darzab districts, the Taliban’s clout is also on the rise in Mang Jek districtof the province.
