Taliban engage in deadly clashes with locals in Uruzgan

GHAZNI (SW) – Lateefa Akbari, chairperson of Ghazni provincial council, has said intense clashes are underway since two days in neighboring Uruzgan between the Taliban and the locals.

She said up to 150 families have left Khas Uruzgan district for Malistan district of Ghazni due to clashes. Lateefa Akbari added the chief of Afghan Local Police, Hakeem Shujai, got injured and five of his guards got killed in clashes.

Mohammad Naeem Tawhidi, a member of the provincial council, said the clashes began when the Taliban stormed the area over the locals’ resistance in paying extortion money to the rebels. Tawhidi said up to 15 people got killed and six more got wounded in clashes.

The Taliban have issued a statement claiming they attacked the ALP check posts in Khas Uruzgan killing 20 members of this force and wounding their commander, Hakeem Shujai.
