CHAGCHARAN (SW): A number of officials in Ghor claim the Taliban have conducted military drills in a number of districts in the province.
Abdul Rehman Atshan, deputy chairman of the provincial council, informed that the Taliban have heavy presence in Shahrak, Tolak and Saghar districts, and are planning to stage massive assaults. He went on to say the Taliban are also engaged in propaganda campaign against the government besides the military drills.
Leader of the Ghor civil society, Khudayar Waqif, has asserted that the Taliban’s sphere of influence extends further to the Herat – Ghor highway, but the government is not taking any action to repel the rebels.
However, spokesman for the governor, Abdul Hai Khatibi, has discarded reports about the Taliban conducting military drills in Ghor. He claimed only a small number of the Taliban are confined to some areas along the Herat – Ghor highway.
This comes as locals report killing of at least one policeman in clashes with the Taliban in the Shahrictak district.
