MAIMANA (SW) – The Taliban insurgents have closed down the main Maimana – Mazar highway by digging three big holes on it in the Sherin Tagab district of Faryab province.
Zainullah Zaki, governor for Sherin Tagab district, told Salam Watandar the insurgents dug these big holes on the highway by using large excavators in the middle of the night. He said the Taliban blocked this part of the highway in a bid to stop the military convoys from travelling between Mazar-e-Sharif and Faryab province.
According to the locals, this is not the first time the insurgents have damaged this key route.
When contacted, Abdul Kareem Yourish, spokesman for the police headquarters in Faryab, confirmed the incident, and said two-meter deep holes have been dug on the main highway with the help of excavators.
Via a statement, the Taliban took responsibility for damaging the Mazar – Maimana highway. This is despite the Eid day message by the Taliban leader in which the insurgents were directed not to attack public places.
