Taliban cancels proposed talks in Islamabad

KABUL (SW) – Following Afghanistan’s complaint to the UN, a proposed meeting between the Taliban and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, in Islamabad has reportedly been cancelled.

No reasons have been given in public by the two sides for the cancellation.

Sibghatullah Ahmadi, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the proposed meeting between the Taliban and the Prime Minister of Pakistan was in clear violations of the U.N restrictions on the Taliban. He said the proposed meeting in Islamabad was not coordinated with Afghanistan, and the Taliban leaders are not allowed by the U.N to travel.

Inviting the Taliban leaders on the UN Black List amounts to Islamabad officially recognizing them, MOFA spokesman said.

The Taliban had announced last week their delegation would visit Islamabad on the invitation of PM Khan.

It was also proposed the U.S Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zlamay Khalilzad, would also hold talks with the Taliban in Pakistan. There were also unconfirmed reports Mohammad Bin Salman, the visiting Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, would also meet the Taliban.

Earlier this month, a group of Afghan politicians held talks with the Taliba in the Russian capital, Moscow, for two days.
