SAMANGAN (SW) – The Taliban insurgents took away drivers of at least 50 trucks carrying coal in the Dara Sof district in Samangan province, an officials said on Thursday.
Mohammad Hashim Sarwari, deputy chairman for the provincial council, told Salam Watandar the Taliban were extorting up to AFN 7000 from each truck driver on monthly basis. He said the rebels had warned the drivers of dire consequences if they declined to pay this amount of money to them.
District governor, Abdul Yaqin Ahmadi, has confirmed the latest incident of abduction. He said the insurgents also took away a number of civilians together with the drivers of some 10 trucks.
The Taliban have not commented on this matter so far.
