
LASHKARGAH (SW): The Taliban militants have abducted at least 20 passengers from a bus on Kandahar-Herat highway in southern Helmand province.
The abduction took place in Gerishk district of the southern Helmand province.
Omar Zawak, spokesman for governor told Salam Watandar that the passengers have been abducted from Mahajer Bazaar in Greshk district. He said that chances are high that the security personnel are among those who have been abducted.
He further said that security forces have been sent to the area and efforts to liberate the passengers have begun.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the abduction. In a message, the rebels asserted that those associated with the security forces have been taken into custody.
Nearly 19 days ago, the Taliban abducted 9 passengers from the Kandahar-Kabul highway, and a day after that they abducted 50 passengers from Kunduz-Takhar highway.
These waves of abductions have concerned the citizens in the country. A number of demonstrations have been staged in various parts of the country urging the government to ensure safety on the highways.
