BADAKHSHAN (SW): The local authorities and some residents of Badakhshan told Salam Watandar that Tajikistan has cut off the electricity to Ishkashim district of this province due to nonpayment of dues.

Jawhar Beig, the head of development council of the Ishkashim district said that the reason for the shutdown of electricity is the nonpayment of dues by the Ishkashim police and the Badakhshan border police.

According to Beig, people are without power for a week now, and the local government has not been able to solve the problem.

Sultan Mohammad Attaei, the head of electricity division in Badakhshan said that the electricity money is one of the issues for the border police, though; Attaei informed that efforts are underway to resolve the issue soon.

Abdul Khaliq Aqsayei, police chief of Badakhshan said that Badakhshan police have paid their electricity dues and urged that the Ministry of Defense pay the border police dues soon.

It is now nearly four years that Tajikistan has been supplying electricity to bordering districts in Badakhshan, and it is the first time that Tajikistan has cut off the power on one of the districts because of the nonpayment of dues.
