06/02/2018

MALDIVES (SW): Abdulla Yameen, the president of the Maldives declared a state of emergency on Monday night, and ordered the security forces to arrest the former president of the Maldives and members of the Supreme Court.

The Maldives police arrested the Chief Justice and other Supreme Court judges on Tuesday. No information has yet been released on allegations against these judges.

The Maldives Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the trial of Mohammad Nashid, the former president of this country, was unconstitutional. President Nashid has been the first democratically elected president of the Maldives.

The former president, Mohammad Nashid, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in March 2015 on charges of terrorism, a political conviction condemned by the United Nations.

A new political crisis has started in the Maldives since the Supreme Court has rejected the allegations against the former president – Mohammad Nashid.

The Maldives Attorney General, warning about the increasing insecurity in the Indian subcontinent, said that the Supreme Court has been trying to impeach Abdula Yameen for not complying with the court’s ruling on the release of the imprisoned opposition leaders.
