Spinal cord injury leaves former soldier unaided

HERAT CITY (SW): Niamatullah Farhadi served the Afghan National Army (ANA) for three years before a spinal cord injury that he sustained in a clash with the rebels in western Herat province.

Some six years ago, Farhadi was alongside his comrades when the Shindand Air Base in Herat came under the Taliban attack and left him with a major blow to the spinal cord. The injured soldier recalled that his convoy was hit by rockets fired by the Taliban as the ANA was on the way to rebuff the militants’ attack.

Since then, he has been struggling at the public hospital in Heart for treatment. Now, he has associated hopes with the media to raise his voice and make the higher-ups listen to his ordeal.

Niamatullah Farhadi was first brought to the 400-bed hospital in Kabul and later taken to Iran with the help of Red Cross. His spine was operated upon in Iran and after that he spent five years on bed. Farhadi told Salam Watandar that to try his luck for treatment abroad, he sold all his fortune to reach Germany. But, the doctors there told him it was impossible to cure him.

Anxious about his future, the former ANA man said that the government stopped paying his salary months after his injury and now he has no proper place to live.

His 48-year old mother Sufra Farhadi informed that his son’s wife and son lost their lives when their home in Rubat Sangi district was hit by a rocket. She complaint that they are now deprived of all basic needs of life. Sufra Farhadi added that her son got bedridden while serving the nation hence the government should at least provide them with a proper place to live in.
