KABUL (SW): The fifth season of Afghanistan’s very own ‘Shpageeza’ T20 cricket league commenced on Monday with the defending champion Kabul Eagles winning their first match.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai scored impressive 72 runs to secure an eight-wicket win for his side over Bost Defenders.

Bating first, the Bost Defenders under the captaincy of Shahpor Zadran managed to score 136 runs in the given 20 overs. Cameron Delport from South Africa remained the top scorer with his hard-hitting 53 runs. Chasing the target, the Kabul Eagles got off a shaky start by losing 2 quick wickets. Captain Stanikzai and young batsman Hasmatullah Shaheedy steadied the innings, and managed to achieve the target in the 18th over.

Shaheedy also scored a fifty, and remained not out for 55 runs. Stanikzai was named as the man of the match for his match-wining knock.

In the second match of the day, Spingar Tigers overpowered the Amu Sharks in a nail-biting encounter. Bating first, Amu Sharks scored 159 in the given 20 overs. The Spingar Tigers equalized it that paved the way for a ‘Super Over’. The Spingar Tigers managed to score 17 runs in it, and restricted the Amu Sharks from achieving the target.

Zimbabwe’s Elton Chegombra was named as the man of the match for his 40-runs innings.
