Senators pronounce Karzai’s remarks as detrimental

KABUL (SW): A number of Mesharano Jirga (upper house) members pronounced the former president Hamid Karzai’s criticism of the National Unity Government (NUG) as damaging to the national interest.

Strongly criticizing the Thursday’s attack by the U.S. on Deash hideouts in Achin district of the country, Karzai has launched vigorous campaign both against the U.S. in Afghanistan as well as against the NUG. “Unfortunately, the US presence in Afghanistan is moving us towards more war and destruction as signalled by its latest WMD [weapon of mass destruction] use on our land. The endorsement of U.S. WMD use on Afghan soil by NUG is against the aspiration of our people. I, as a citizen of this country, can no longer consider the NUG as my representative”, Karzai has said in a series of tweets.

Commenting on this, deputy speaker of the house Mohammad Asef said Karzai was installed as the president by the U.S., during his two tenures hundreds of thousands of Americans were actively fighting in Afghanistan, and they conducted numerous air raids. Jumadin Giyanwal, another member of the house, said on his term that the country is going through sensitive times, and the nation should be united not pushed towards division. He blamed Karzai for leaving behind a heritage of corruption and lawlessness.

There were, however, some voices in support for the former president. Senator Mohammad Hashim claimed law and order situation during Karzai’s term in office was much better. He stressed that Karzai is speaking out his mind only for the welfare of the people.
