MAIMANA CITY(SW): Local officials in northern Faryab province said that the security forces have recaptured the district after it fell to the militants on Wednesday.
According to the district chief, Taliban captured Garziwan while the district had no acting police chief to look after the security affairs. He added out of 60 police officers stationed there, 54 have left their jobs.
Baryali Basharyar, Head of the Anti-Crime Unit in Faryab, told SalamWatandar the district has been reclaimed by the security forces with the help of locals.
Abdul Satar Barez, Acting governor in Faryab, said hundreds of Afghan security forces have moved into villages in the district to fully clear the district from the Taliban.
It is believed that the Taliban still have control over some villages in the district.
It is said that the provincial capital Maimana city is what the Taliban aim to attack. Abdul Satar, acting governor in Faryab, said that the security situation was a concern but there was enough number of security personnel in the city and more supporting forces would soon reach in the area.
Reza Rezayee, spokesman for 209th Shaheen Corps told Salamwatandar that security forces have established a strong defensive belt around Maimana city.
He further said that more supporting forces would soon arrive in the city and a mop-up operation would be conducted to clear the Taliban from the area.
