KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday summoned top security officials to brief the house over security and electoral affairs, but they did not show-up.
In separate letters sent to the house, the security bosses excused to attend the session, a move that sparked mixed reaction among the lawmakers.
Abdul Qayum Sajjadi, a member of the house, said this move by the ministers of the security sector is in clear violation of the Constitution. He said the house is legally authorized to summon the ministers over their performance, and if it is now allowed to function than the WJ should shut its doors for good.
Another member of the house, Saleh Mohammad Saljoki, said there is a need to fix the way the house summons ministers. He said MPs from each province have the right to pose two questions, but they often lack relevance in such sessions.
At the end, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the house, said there is nothing wrong with the format of the sessions, and the security sector bosses would be summoned next week.
In their letters, the security sector ministers cited fragile state of security across the country and sensitivity of the nature of information as reasons for not attending the session.
