GHAZNI CITY (SW): Residents in Ghazni province’s Qara Bagh district have closed down schools in protest against alleged killing of two civilians by the police.

They gathered in a mosque on Thursday to complain against the police. According to the locals, the district police chief is responsible for the death of two civilians. Protesting against the incident, all schools in the district were closed down today.

They claimed to be constantly persecuted by the police. Narrating the latest incident, they said that a police team entered ‘Wali Jan’ village and killed two civilians on the charges of collaborating with the Taliban. The district dwellers warned to keep the schools shut as long as the district police chief is not changed. Reports suggest those allegedly killed by the police were young boys one aged 11 and the other 17.

Meanwhile, Ruhullah Popoal, the district police chief, has claimed that closure of schools is actually a part of a plot against him by the Taliban. He charged that the Taliban want to malign public opinion against the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

Abdul Kareem Mateen, the provincial governor, has also blamed the Taliban for the closure of schools. Mateen added a team has been sent to the area to probe the death of the civilians. He added that all efforts would be ensured to re-open the closed schools.

Mohammad Abid Abid, the director for education in the province, has rejected the claims about closure of all 50 schools in the Qara Bagh district. He told Salam Watandar that only eight schools have been closed down, which would be reopened soon.
