Salam Watandar’s report rescues minor bride

PUL-I-KHUMRi (SW): A minor bride who went through domestic violence on daily basis has finally got liberty thanks to a report by the Salam Watandar.

A report by Salam Watandar about the ordeal of 14 years old Wagma caught the attention of relevant authorities in Baghlan province. With their efforts, the young girl has now been provided shelter at the local ‘Safe Home’. Wagma said she feels much safe and comfortable at this ‘safe home’ in comparison to her husband’s home.

With a bright and smiling face, she expressed the desire to work for justice and the rights of women in the future. Wagma said she has started a new life with new hopes. The young victim of domestic violence urged all the girls and women faced with similar situation to speak-up against the oppression, and raise their voice through media.

Khadeja Yaqin, director for women affairs in the province said in this regard that outdated norms are a major cause for domestic violence and cases of abuse against women. She urged upon parents and elders in the communities to be sensitive to the rights of the younger ones, particularly women and girls.

Wagma was married to a 17 year old boy in her village a year ago, and her in-laws made her subject to constant violence before she was rescued by the authorities and moved to the local safe home for women and girls.
