Sadats want ethnicity marked on the ID cards

13/01/2018

KABUL (SW): Leaders of the Sadat community on Saturday urged the government to legally recognize this ethnic group in the proposed new biometric identity cards.

Syed Ishaq Gillani, leader of the community, told a press conference in Kabul that the sub-tribes of this community namely Sadat, Bayat, Qarlooq and Khalili should be recongnized just as other ethnic groups. He stressed ID card holders of all ethnic groups should have this affiliation marked on the cards.

Other speakers also called for incorporating ethnic identity of the card holder on the face of the proposed biometric cards, and warned of boycotting the process if this is not done.

A number of other ethnic groups have also called for incorporating ethnic identity on the cards as the matter is under discussion at the Wolesi Jirga (lower house).
