FAIZABAD (SW) – Heavy snow in Badakhshan province has closed down roads connecting nine districts with the provincial capital Faizbabad.
Talbuddin Qaderi, a member of the provincial council, told Salam Watandar that the residents of remote districts are living in isolation after closure of the roads. According to Qaderi, on the one hand, lack of adequate health services and, on the other hand, the closure of the roads, has left people exposed to serious threats.
Residents of these districts gathered in Faizabad, the capital of the province, saying they cannot return to their homes because of the presence of the Taliban in the Wardouj district, and the closure of the alternative road routes.
Sayed Abdullah Homayoun Dehqan, chairman of the natural disaster management department, also confirmed the closure of the roads in 9 districts. He said that since two days, the teams of this department are working to open these routes to the people.
While local officials have always spoken of creating strategic reserves and being prepared to respond to natural disasters, local residents said these promises have never been implemented and the local government has failed to provide assistance to the needy people.
