HERAT CITY (SW): The western province of Herat has witnessed more than 100 road accidents in the past one year.
Health department officials at the public hospital in Herat have said most of these accidents have occurred on the highways. Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for the public hospital, told Salam Watandar traffic accidents have increased significantly in the past 10 months. He added up to 100 passengers have died and more than 5000 got injured in these accidents.
Family members of those who lost their lives or limbs in these accidents say competition between the transport companies, over speeding, faulty roads, and other violations of the traffic rules are the main causes behind these accidents. People have urged the highway police to control speed limits on the highways.
Abdul Ahad Walizada, spokesman for the police in Herat, acknowledged the issues. He complained lack of personnel hinders the implementation of the traffic rules on the highways.
