KABUL (SW): Residents living near and around the Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) have been traumatized by surging attacks in the vicinity; prompting them to demand relocation.
Residents in this part of the capital told Salam Watandar that existence of a foreign military compound and the HKIA itself has attracted so many terrorist attacks that often leave deadly impacts on civilians.
On Monday alone, the area witnessed two deadly terrorist attacks.
Haji Abdul Ahad, a local said that the government should help resolve their grievances. “The government should either remove the foreigners’ military compound from here or relocate the civilian to any alternative place”, he appealed.
Another resident of the area, Baba Jan said that the human and financial loss of the attacks was unbearable for the poor people in the area. “My shop’s windows got broken in a suicide attack two days ago but when I bought new windows, they too got broken on Monday leaving my customers injured and inflicting financial loss on me”, he said.
According to the Ministry of Interior, two people died and 34 more were wounded in the attack that took place on Monday evening.
The NATO-led Resolute Support strongly condemned the two terrorist attacks that took place in Kabul on Monday. “The National Unity Government is pursuing an effective and lasting peace process, however, some Taliban continue to pursue a destructive path of attacking innocent Afghan civilians” said Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner, Resolute Support spokesman.
Insurgents often attack places with a high density of innocent civilians. This willful disregard for human life is the leading cause of civilian casualties in Afghanistan. The U.N. attributed 70 percent of all civilian casualties directly to terrorists in the first half of 2015.
In 2015, there were approximately 6,500 civilian deaths and injuries caused by insurgent attacks.
