LASHKARGAH (SW): A number of religious scholars have joined the civil society’s movement for peace in Helmand’s restive Nawa district.
Shah Wali, a member of the civic movement for peace in Nawa, told Salam Watandar this initiative has the backing of the local population as well as the religious scholars. Haji Malik, another member of the movement, said the sit-in camp in Nawa would remain in place until their demands for ceasefire are not met by all parties of the conflict in Afghanistan.
After a number of protesters fell ill, the main protest camp in the provincial capital Lashkargah ended the hunger strike today, however, the sit-in would continue. Similar camps in solidarity with the Helmand sit-in movement for peace have been established in Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarahr and a number of other provinces.
This came after a deadly car bombing outside the Ghazni Mohammad Ayub Khan Stadium in Lashkargah last week killed 15 people, prompting the local men and women to launch the movement for peace in the country.
