KABUL (SW) – Religious scholars from across the country gathered in Kabul on Saturday for a two-day moot on counter-corruption.

The participants cited endemic corruption as a reason fuelling war in the country, and stressed upon the need to combat it.

Waizzada Behsudi, one of the participants, said on the occasion until government takes serious steps to counter corruption, such efforts would not yield results. He went on to say common people are not engaged in corruption, but top officials are promoting corruption in the country.

In the meantime, Fareed Ahmadi, the Attorney General, acknowledged corruption in state institutions, but urged religious scholars to play their part in combating it. He said corruption has fuelled poverty, insecurity and drug addiction in the country.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani is set to address the final day of this moot on Sunday.
