KABUL (SW): A number of religious scholars, civil society activists and politicians in Kabul held protest demonstrations against the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
The participants staged protest demonstrations at Kabul’s Eidgah Mosque and in front of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA) office against the atrocities committed by the Myanmar government in the Rakhine state against the Muslim minority.
Attaullah Fayzani, a member of the Afghanistan Ulema Council (council of religious scholars), urged the UN and other international organizations to thoroughly investigate the matter, and bring the culprits to justice.
The ‘Justice for All’ organization organized the demonstration in front of the UNAMA office on the Kabul – Jalalabad Highway. It urged the world body not to remain silent over the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar. Mohammad Hashim Wahaj, head of the ‘Justice for All’, said on the occasion economic sanctions should be imposed to Myanmar in the wake of these atrocities.
Similar protest demonstrations were held on Thursday in Nangarhar and Jawzjan provinces. Participants of these demonstrations urged the UN to play its due role in Rohingya crisis.
More than 27,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled violence in Myanmar in recent days, the United Nations has said. A further 20,000 Rohingya have massed along the Bangladeshi frontier, the UN added in a statement, but are barred from entry as they run from burning villages and Myanmar army operations.
