TALUQAN (SW): A viral video on social media showing a group of men thrashing a woman in Takhar province has caused an uproar.

Human rights activists and many social media users have vehemently criticized this mob justice, and have held the government responsible for failing to safeguard the rights of women. Addressing a press conference in Kabul on Sunday, Spogmay Wardag, deputy minister for Women Affairs, urged relevant authorities in Takhar to arrest the perpetrators behind this incident.

This incident reportedly took place in Chahab district’s Hamdeen village, which is under government control.

Sunat Timore, spokesman for the provincial governor, said in this regard that the father-in-law, brother and uncle of the woman have been taken into custody. He added the woman beaten in public by the men is also in police custody.

Fazal Karim, head of mosques at the Ministry of Haj and Religious Affairs, has also condemned the mob justice in Takhar. He has said no individual or group is allowed to impose self-styled Sharia on others. He said such rulings are in clear violation of Islamic principles and the laws of the land.

There have been multiple incidents of the sort in the country recently. Some four years ago, a girl named Rukhshana was stoned to death in Ghor province while another girl named Farkhanda was lynched by mob in Kabul few years back.

According to the Ministry of Women Affairs, up to 91 cases of murder, 6 cases of rape and 8 cases of honor killings were reported in the past year.
