‘Protesters should refer to legal institutions’

26/01/2019

KABUL (SW) – The Independent Election Commission has said a media report against alleged corruption in this electoral body was unethical and unprofessional.

Gula Jan Abdulbadi Sayad, head of the IEC, told a presser here on Saturday those claiming rigging or fraud has taken place should refer to the legal institutions with proof. He said a media report about corruption in the IEC has been published based on the claims by a candidate without having the opinion of the electoral commission.

Sayad said the candidate wanted to take ‘revenge’ from the IEC, and the report was aimed at discrediting this national institution.

Reports in the local media suggested Mohammad Layq Malikzada, a Wolesi Jirga (lower house) candidate was asked by the IEC officials to pay $ 5000 for victory in the polls.

Also on Saturday, the protesting WJ candidates closed down gates of the Hamid Karzai International Airport. These protests demanding fresh elections in Kabul have been going on for many days now.
