Protest in Canberra as Ghani tours Australia

KABUL (SW): During President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s trip to Australia, tens of Afghans residing there took to the street to protest against deportation of the failed asylum seekers.

Ghani is in Canberra on his leg of tour to the Asia-Pacific region in which he would also visit Singapore and Indonesia. The protestors were holding banners saying “Hazaras are not safe in Afghanistan”, and “No to deportation”. Kawa Ahmadzadai, an organizer of the demonstration, told Salam Watandar the purpose of the demonstration was to raise voice against discrimination towards the Hazara community, and urge for fair treatment of refugees. He stressed that the Afghan government has no right to ink a deal with the Australian government that would see the failed asylum seekers deported back to Afghanistan.

Ali Hazara, a participant of the rally, stressed that the Canberra government should seriously monitor the utilization of its aid in Afghanistan. The participants also called for just and fair distribution of aid in Afghanistan.

We wished to have the views of the presidential palace on this issue, but to no avail. A day earlier, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, deputy presidential spokesman, said a day earlier that the issue of refugees is not on the agenda of the President’s tour.
