KANDAHAR CITY (SW): The protest against alleged high-handedness by police on Kandahar – Uruzgan highway has entered fourth day.
Protesters claim the police on this highway is involved in extortion and physical abuse of transporters and passengers. Khudai Rahim and Saad Ullah, two such protesters, told Salam Watandar the highway would be kept blocked until their demand for improvement in police behavior is not met.
The passengers are equally frustrated with the blockade of the highway as well as the high-handedness by the police.
Two such passengers, Abdul Salam and Wali Jan, said almost every check post is involved in extortion. They urged the government to take this mater seriously, and help clear the highway.
Commenting on this, Abdul Wahid, deputy governor of Uruzgan, said this matter has been shared with the higher-ups. He said a commission has been formed to devise strategy for re-construction and better policing on this highway.
This important highway was blocked last week when unknown gunmen shot a university professor and three more passengers dead here.
