Protest against civilian casualties turns violent

JALALABAD (SW): At least two protesters died in clashes with Afghan Local Police (ALP) men in Nangarhar’s Chaparhar district on Saturday.

The protestors were agitating in front of the district administration against the alleged killings of civilians in the security forces’ operation last night. They claimed a number of civilians died in the security forces’ operation in the Hadya Khail and Mandar Khail villages last night.

Guldad Khan and Syed Umar, two residents of Chaparhar, informed these civilians got killed in the security forces’ night raids while they were irrigating fields in the night. They claimed up to ten civilians got killed in the air raids. The protestors also condemned the ALP’s actions against them.

In the meantime, Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, has confirmed the security forces conducted an operation against the Taliban in this district. He said investigations into the claims related to civilian casualties are underway. He confirmed the security forces have taken away some locals for investigations.

This is not the first incident of the sort in Nangarhar province.
