KABUL (SW): Scores of footballers from Khost, Paktia and Logar provinces took to the streets in Kabul on Wednesday against alleged monopoly at the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF).
Chanting slogans against the AFF President Syed Karamuddin Karim and others, the footballers called for long-due elections to be held swiftly. They charged the AFF leadership for monopoly and taking the federation as hostage. They also urged the government to take action against it.
It is worth noticing the legal term of AFF President Karamuddin has ended over a year ago. A while ago, Haroon Popal, a candidate for the AAF presidency, approached the Federation to submit his nomination papers, but was charged with ‘political interference’. Representatives from at least 20 provincial football federations have sent a letter to FIFA to push for elections at the AFF, and stopping Karamuddin from seeking re-appointment.
Meanwhile, Yosuf Kargar, technical adviser at the AFF, has told the media that the reason behind delay in elections at the Federation are ‘political interference’. He said until this issue is resolved, holding fresh elections is not possible.
