KABUL (SW): Afghan historian Dr. Hassan Kakar has passed away in California due to a chronic illness at the age of 88.
Dr. Kakar’s death has been pronounced as a huge loss to the academic world in the country. He has been credited with immense contribution in writing and teaching for his country. The veteran historian has to his credit a number of publications on the modern history of Afghanistan and other socio-political affairs.
Born in Laghman province, Dr. Kakar completed his high school studies at the Ahmad Shah Baba Lycée in Kandahar province. He then joined the faculty of literature at the Kabul University, and went on to the UK on a scholarship. The renowned Afghan professor obtained his Masters in modern European history and Islamic era in the Middle East. Dr. Kakar also obtained his PhD in history from a university in London.
In his youth, the Kabul government during the Soviet occupation, imprisoned him for propagating anti-government ideology.
