ASADABAD (SW): Local authorities in Kunar have raised concerns over surge in presence of pro-Daesh fighters in the province.
Col. Juma Gul Himmat, security chief of the province, told Salam Watandar the numbers of pro-Daesh fighters have swollen to two thousand. He added these militants are concentrated in the Chapa Dara, Noor Gul, Wata Pur and adjacent areas, and have a training camp in the Nara district. “Arabs, Punjabis and other foreign militants are training them”, he said.
He added militants from this province also join their peers in neighboring Nangarhar province. He added the gaining strength of the militants can be noted from an armed assault on the government forces in the Chapa Dara district last month. The security chief said 21 militants were killed in that clash.
The local population has expressed similar concerns about the situation. Situated on the Durand Line with Pakistan, Kunar remains a remote and restive province where a number of armed groups are believed to be operating.
