KABUL (SW): General John Nicholson, commander general of NATO forces in Afghanistan, at a joint meeting with officials from Kabul, Parwan and Kapisa provinces said that the United States and Afghanistan have a common enemy, and the United States does not hesitate to end the war and endure peace in Afghanistan.
Gen. Nicholson said the United States is working hard on supporting and training the Afghan security forces especially the Afghan air forces.
‘NATO expects the Afghan parliamentary and presidential elections to be transparent in the next two years, and the political parties to increase their efforts to secure peace and support their government’, Gen. Nicholson added.
Gen. Nicholson highlighted that the new American strategy will increase military and diplomatic pressures on the Taliban and their supporters, especially Pakistan, to compel them to sit for the peace talks with the government of Afghanistan.
However, some members of the House of Representatives (Wolesi Jirga) at the meeting said that the United States should have implemented its new strategy at least 10 years ago.
Mohammad Almas Zahid, a representative of Parwan in the WJ and the advisor to the president for the National Solidarity said that the people of Afghanistan have been at the forefront of the war for the sake of the world’s security and now they want peace from the international community.
Almas Zahidi wanted the United States to pay attention to the economic and development projects in addition to its $26 million daily expenses of war in Afghanistan.
This is the first time a senior NATO official met with the local officials of the Northern provinces in Afghanistan.
