KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani spoke by telephone with his counterpart from Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.
The two sides discussed bilateral relations, especially trade, transit, strengthening regional co-operation and increasing co-operation along the Amu River areas, the presidential palace said in a statement.
"Afghanistan – Tajikistan border will become a point of friendship and progress and will be an example of good friendship and cooperation between the two neighboring countries," President Ghani was quoted as saying in the newsletter published on Monday.
According to the statement, the President of Tajikistan supported the peace process led by the Afghan government and promised that his country would stand by Afghanistan in regional and international meetings. The statement said President of Tajikistan has invited President Ghani to visit Dushanbe in order to expand bilateral and multilateral relations and cooperation.
In this telephone call, both sides agreed that a delegation headed by the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, would visit Tajikistan and begin its work on the agenda of the meeting of the two presidents. The Afghan delegation will hold talks with the Tajik delegation on political issues between the two countries, economic and security cooperation, in particular the fight against terrorism and narcotics, the statement said.
Last week, President of Tajikistan spoke via a loud speaker to the people of Badakhshan in Afghanistan and promised to cooperate with development projects. A number of social media users described this as interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs. There was no reference to it in the statement issued by the presidency.
