KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has left for Brussels to attend the NATO summit.
Shah Hussain Murtazavi, deputy spokesman for the president, told a presser here on Tuesday the summit would continue for two days. The summit would also deliberate on counter-terrorism strategy for Afghanistan, counter-narcotics efforts, support for peace process in Afghanistan and measures to curb criminal networks.
The Afghan president would address the summit on Thursday.
Salam Watandar correspondent has reported that the summit would also deliberate on the presence of the NATO troops in Afghanistan, formal recognition of the peace bid by the Afghan government with the Taliban, and financial assistance to Afghanistan worth $ 4 billion per year till 2024. The exact amount of contribution from each NATO members will be determined later.
As part of the Resolute Support mission, NATO members provide training, advice and assistance to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF). The NATO Summit would also discuss what Afghanistan can deliver and what support it needs in the fight against Daesh.
Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah is also attending the Summit, and is set to hold meetings with NATO leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.
