KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani visited the snow-ravaged Nuristan province on Tuesday to comfort the grieving families.
Unprecedented snow and avalanches over the weekend claimed more than 100 lives, and left many more stranded in the freezing temperatures across the country. More than 80 casualties were reported from the Barg Matal and adjecent districts in Nuristan alone. President Ghani was accompanied by local officials and member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) from Nuristan.
Shah Hussain Murtazawi, deputy spokesman for the President, told Salam Watandar the President has directed concerned authorities to provide immediate medical aid to those affected in this tragedy. “The President left for Nuristan this morning, to have the firsthand knowledge of the state of affairs and comfort the grieving families”, he said.
Mutazawi added medical and other aid have reached Nuristan and other affected areas of the country.
Meanwhile, Hafiz Abdul Qayume, governor of Nuristan, has said 58 victims of the heavy snow and avalanches have been laid to rest today while many injured have been sent to Jalalabad for medical treatment.
Locals in Jalalabad and Asad Abad cities in neighboring Nangarhar and Kunar provinces respectively have launched aid campaigns for the victims of Nuristan.
