KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday landed in Islamabad on a two-day official visit to Pakistan on the invitation of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
According to President Ghani’s chief adviser, Fazel Fazly, based on strong mandate from Loya Jirga, President Ghani is in Pakistan to pursue normalization of relationship between the two states. “President’s forward looking vision ensures stability not only in but also offers opportunity for to address its struggling economy”, he said in a tweet.
Earlier this month, President Ghani vowed to open new 'historic chapter' of ties with Pakistan in his forthcoming trip to Islamabad. In a televised speech after offering Eid al-Fitr prayers in the capital Kabul, Ghani underlined the significance of Afghanistan's ties with its Pakistan.
It is worth noticing that ahead of President Ghani’s trip, a number of key politicians from Afghanistan attended a peace conference in Lahore, Pakistan. Among them included Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Abdul Lateef Pidram, Atta Mohammad Noor, Kareem Khalili and Mohammad Mohaqiq. They said Pakistan assured support for intra-Afghan dialogue and ceasefire.
This comes as the U.S. and the Taliban are set to resume talks in the Qatari capital, Doha on peace in Afghanistan.
