President Ghani emphasizes on peace in the region

KABUL (SW): President Ashraf Ghani held talks with Pakistani Prime Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi at the President Palace today (Friday). During the meeting, President Ghani said that Afghanistan is at the heart of peace and stability in the region.

The President further said that Afghanistan and Pakistan are in a sensitive situation, and the decisions made by the two leaders will affect the fate of the future generations.

President Ghani in his meeting today with the Pakistani Prime Minister raised the issue of violations along the Durand Line and said that the current situation does not benefit anyone and that any concerns in this regard should be addressed through talks.

The two sides also discussed the transit of Central Asia electricity from Afghanistan to Pakistan and the formation of a joint energy transfer commission. The Quetta – Kandahar, Peshawar –Jalalabad railroad projects and construction of Peshawar- Jalalabad highway were also discussed in the meeting today.

The exchange of prisoners, the honorable return of Afghan refugees and the Afghanistan – Pakistan action plan on peace and solidarity were among the topics discussed between the President Ghani and Prime Minister of Pakistan Khaqan Abbasi in today’s meeting. The two sides agreed that the foreign ministers and security advisers of the two countries finalize the timeline and mechanism for the return of Afghan refugees to the country.

The Presidential Palace spokesperson said that the Pakistani PM has come to Afghanistan to begin the “government to government” talks; however, it is unclear when and under what conditions these talks will start.

The Pakistani PM welcomed the Afghan government’s peace offer to Taliban and said that peace talks should be conducted under the leadership of the Afghan government.

The Presidential Palace called the Pakistani PM’s visit to Afghanistan promising with respect to peace and said the Afghan government expects this trip to create a climate of trust between the two countries.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Prime Minister of Pakistan arrived in Kabul on Friday the 6th of April for face-to-face talks with the country’s officials.
