Power outage keeps Kabul in the dark

KABUL (SW): Much of the Afghan capital Kabul remain out of electricity as the Taliban managed to blow-up a main transmission line coming from Uzbekistan.

Authorities at Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) said on Thursday that the local officials in Baghlan province have assured to clean-up landmines near the damaged line in a bid to pave way for restoration.

Wahid Tawhidi, Director Communication at DABS told Salam Watandar that the area where the transmission line was hit remains under the control of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and it would take up to eight hours to fix it.

It is worth mentioning that around 280 megawatts of electricity comes to Afghanistan via this transmission line from Uzbekistan.

After the outage of the electricity on Tuesday night, the government blamed the Taliban for blowing the line up during fighting with the ANSF. The Taliban however, asserted that the line was damaged due to shelling by the ANSF, a blame rejected by the officials.

DABS have announced that residents in Kabul would receive electricity for only 4 to 5 hours a day from alternative sources.

Tawhidi informed that only 155 megawatts of electricity was available for Kabul, 80 megawatts of which comes from Tajikistan while the rest of 75 megawatt is generated locally via thermal resources.

Abdul Satar Mubariz, Governor Baghlan said in this regard that the DABS staff along with the ANSF have arrived at the site and are likely to fix the damage by Thursday evening.
