KABUL (SW): Latest findings by the Central Statistics Organization indicate poverty swell by 16 per cent from the year 2012 to the year 2016.
Sharing findings of the study, Haseebullah Mohed, deputy director CSO, said this study would help the government devise proper strategies to eliminate poverty. This study has marked AFN 2062 monthly income as the level of poverty, and in line with this, up to 54.5 per cent of the population is living below the poverty line. This level is seen to surge to 67.5 per cent in winters.
The study has revealed up to 48 per cent of the population is below the age of 15. On gender-gape, the report noted men are in-charge of some 80.6 affairs. In terms of joblessness, the report stated 24 per cent of the population, including 18 per cent men and 41 per cent women, are unemployed.
In the meantime, Mustafa Mastoor, Minister for Economy, said actual facts and statistics help the government chalk strategies to bring improvements. Pointing to the CSO report, Mastoor said some previous strategies of the MoE proved significant while some other projects proved a failure.
The study indicated a significant part of the population is engaged with agriculture followed by some others engaged with mining and electricity distribution.
Among few positive developments confirmed by the CSO study was improvement in levels of literacy from 31 per cent in 2006 to 53.6 per cent in 2016.
The report mentioned 70 per cent of urban population in Afghanistan is residing in unsafe and improper dwellings.
