KABUL (SW) – Leaders of a number of political parties gathered in the capital Kabul on Saturday to call for drastic reforms in the voter registration drive.
Leaders of the Hezb-e-Islami, Jamiat-e-Islami, Wahdat-e-Islami, Junbish-e-Islami, Wahdat-e-Mardum, Maaz-e-Milli, Alliance for Salvation and Stability, and representatives of the former president, Hamid Karzai, gathered for this moot today. A declaration issued at the end noted that the government should provide a monitoring room for political parties for observation. They stressed equal opportunity to vote should be made available to all.
Reading out the declaration, Asadullah Sadati, leader of the Wahdat-e-Islami party, said the electoral commissions and the government have wasted millions of dollars. The parties also called for incorporating biometric technology for the forthcoming polls.
Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, deputy spokesman for the Independent Election Commission, told Salam Watandar the voter registration drive is going ahead swiftly with transparency. He discarded the allegations and criticism by the political parties as too late, and in contradiction to the Constitution.
The political parties warned to push ahead for the implementation of their demands thorugh all available means.
