Political parties claim massive rigging took place

22/10/2018

KABUL (SW) – A number of political parties on Monday raised questions over the credibility of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) elections amid reports of irregularities and rigging.

Through a statement, the political parties noted there were delays, irregularities and lack of utilization of the biometric devices of voters’ verification during the polls. The statement further claimed deliberate delays were part of the alleged engineered rigging of the elections.

Khan Mohammad Wahdat, a leader of the Junbish-e-Mili Afghanistan party, hailed the participation of the people in the process, but stressed the electoral glitches have harmed the credibility of the process.

The political parties claimed that part of the failure in electoral management has been due to the refusal of their demands by the Independent Election Commission.

The IEC has acknowledged that there were shortcomings in the electoral process, but vowed that it has been able to rebuild the credibility of the electoral process. According to the IEC, nearly 4 million people voted.

Earlier, the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) had announced that there have been incalculable failures in the process, and Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive officer of the National Unity Government, has also made similar statement.
